If I could give you one rule after a 90-minute Lomi Lomi massage, it’s this: slow down for the next 24 to 48 hours. Rest for 5 to 10 minutes, sip water, and skip heavy workouts, hot tubs, and long sun exposure so your body can actually hold on to that “I feel so relaxed” feeling. I hear it all the time, including from guests who loved that I “took the time to work on the muscle that needed to be work on” and left feeling light and calm in Honolulu.
First 24–48 hours after Lomi Lomi: the simple do’s that make it last
Lomi Lomi uses long, flowing forearm strokes to relax the nervous system and help tight areas let go. That’s why the first day or two matters. If you go right back into intense movement or heat, you often end up feeling puffy, extra sore, or like the massage “didn’t stick.”
Right now: Sit up slowly, take a few deep breaths, and drink water in small sips. I’d rather you hydrate steadily than chug a huge bottle and feel queasy.
Do this today
- Hydrate: Keep sipping water the rest of the day, then aim for extra fluids for the next 24 hours. Honolulu’s heat and humidity make this even more important.
- Gentle movement only: Easy walking and light stretching are great. Keep it calm and pain-free.
- Eat lightly: A normal meal is fine. Heavy, salty, or alcohol-heavy plans can make you feel more dehydrated and inflamed.
Avoid this for 24–48 hours
- Heavy exercise and lifting: Give your muscles time to settle. If you’re planning a Diamond Head hike, I recommend doing your Lomi Lomi after, not right before.
- Hot tubs and saunas: Heat can intensify post-massage inflammation and dehydration.
- Long sun exposure: If you’re heading back out to Waikiki, plan shade breaks and sunscreen. Skin can feel a little more sensitive after oil-based work.
The first week: how to handle soreness, sun, and that “release” feeling
Most people feel looser and calmer right away. A smaller group feels a little sore the next day, especially if we focused on specific tight spots. I’ve had guests tell me they were grateful we worked areas they didn’t even realize were holding tension, like achilles, forearms, and hands. When those areas finally let go, it can feel amazing and also a bit tender later.
What’s normal
- Mild soreness that peaks around 24 hours and fades over 2 to 3 days
- Feeling extra sleepy or “spaced out” the day of your session
- Emotional release, like feeling lighter, teary, or quiet after a deep relaxation session
What to do if you’re sore
Rest and gentle movement usually solves it. If you have a small area that feels irritated or a little inflamed, a cold pack for 10 minutes can help. If you’re dealing with general tightness, wait about 24 hours and then use a warm compress to soften the area.
Waikiki tip: If you’re doing an Ala Moana shopping day, plan comfortable shoes and water. Lots of walking right after massage can make your calves and feet complain.
Shower, oil, and sunscreen after Lomi Lomi: small habits that protect your skin
If I used oil during your Lomi Lomi, I generally recommend waiting 30 to 60 minutes before you shower. That gives your skin a chance to absorb a bit, and it keeps you from scrubbing off all the comfort you just paid for.
Quick shower rules
- Keep water lukewarm: Super hot water can leave you lightheaded and can dry your skin faster.
- Use a mild cleanser: Skip abrasive scrubs that can irritate freshly massaged skin.
- Moisturize, then sunscreen: A lightweight moisturizer helps, and sunscreen is non-negotiable if you’re stepping out into Honolulu sun.
If you added CBD oil for muscle tension relief, keep your skin care gentle that day. I’d rather you keep the area calm than layer on a bunch of new products.
Beach, swim, exercise: how to plan Lomi Lomi around Waikiki life
People ask me this a lot because Waikiki plans are real. You can still enjoy your day, just time it smart so you don’t undo your session.
Beach or pool: I recommend avoiding prolonged sun exposure for 24 to 48 hours. A quick dip is usually fine if you’re feeling steady, but rinse off after and rehydrate.
Exercise: Wait 24 to 48 hours for intense training. Gentle movement is encouraged, especially if you’re tight from long hospitality shifts or lots of walking.
Big outings: If you have Diamond Head, Kapahulu exploring, or an Ala Moana day planned, I like scheduling massage after the activity so your body can truly downshift.
If you want more prep tips before your appointment, I wrote a separate guide on what to expect from your first Lomi Lomi massage. And if you’re comparing styles, my post on the benefits of Lomi Lomi massage for stress relief breaks it down in plain language.
When to reach out after your 90-minute Lomi Lomi, and when to book again
A little tenderness is normal. Feeling deeply relaxed is normal too. What I don’t want you doing is “toughing it out” if something feels off. If you notice severe or worsening pain, unusual swelling, or bruising that spreads quickly, reach out to me so I can talk it through with you.
“The pressure was perfect for what my body needed.”
one of our regulars
If your shoulders and neck tighten back up fast, or you’re preparing for long work shifts, hikes, or lots of walking around Waikiki, I’ll help you pick a maintenance rhythm that makes sense. Some visitors come in more than once on a trip because they like how their body feels after that first reset.
Ready for your next session?
My 90-minute Lomi Lomi is $105, and the extra time makes a difference for full-body relaxation and deeper stress relief. If you’re searching “lomi lomi massage near me” while you’re in Waikiki, I’m right here in Honolulu and easy to reach.
